What does it mean to be human?

Our humanity is our common thread

One of our deepest human needs is connection.

Within genuine connection, we need to experience: I am seen. I am heard. I am known. I am valued. I belong, but belonging is not the same as fitting in. Fitting in can ask us to change ourselves to be accepted. True belonging allows us to stay connected to who we are while remaining connected to one another.

HUMAN CONNECTION & TRUE BELONGING

Human First believes an education in being human is essential to our individual and collective flourishing.

We educate ourselves extensively for work, but where do we learn how to be human?

How to know ourselves.
How to understand our emotions.
How to communicate.
How to repair.
How to set boundaries.
How to stay connected.

How to belong without losing ourselves.

What is Human First?

Human First is a movement and cultural conversation bringing humanity back to the centre of how we live. Across different cultures, generations and beliefs, we share fundamental human needs. For over a decade, Michelle has explored what it means to be human. Human First is her answer. Her work is ultimately about reconnecting people with what it means to be fully human.

FULLY ALIVE

Being fully alive doesn’t mean being happy, positive, or energized all the time. It means being present for the fullness of being human:

Love and joy, grief and vulnerability, beauty and uncertainty, relationships and meaning, creativity and purpose, nature and wonder, even the difficult parts of life.

To be fully human is not to feel good all the time. It is to be present for all of it.

This is your invitation to become more deeply human.
